Meeting some of the photographers
An exhibition with a heart.
Photographers Giving Back is an incredible contribution to journalistic photography. Photographers world wide grant their lives and their passion to important issues that needs visualisation. Issues and conflict that touch everyday souls, cultures, regions, countries, in all, our world.
Picture of the year
The program is design to set focus on the journalistic photographer as well as the controversy that they cover. Going into regions where they do not only put their lives at risk but also the issues that they encounter. This year, Marco Vernaschi won the “Picture of the Year” award as well as the “Picture Story of the Year” award. His images reveal the harsness of the region of Guinea. Where the assassination of the President merely is one of many tragedies in this region. The award winning photographer was at the place of assassination only hours after it had taken place and his photograph reveals in all its brutality what had surpassed.

PGB
The competition invites international photographers to contribute their work. The jury, compriced of internationally acclaimed photographers and editors, is headed by Marc Prüst a a long time photography curator. PGB is based on sponsorships and contributions. The Photographer is granted a prize, but also each year an amount is set aside for a chosen cause.
“This year, we were able to give back almost USD 5,000 to a home for abused women in Eastern Congo. The money is being used to help 230 women to start a smallholding. They have bought rakes and sprinklers and are now cultivating potatoes, carrots and tomatoes, says Jonas Lemberg, founder of the project.”
There is room for more contributions and sponsorships so that one is able to uphold this important competition and focus on the important issues in our world. You can see the whole exhibition at Fotomässan Stockholm 2010 and Fotomessen Oslo 2011.
The competition will open up for new entries in December 2010.
